Protecting our Green Open Spaces
It was a Labour Council that allowed property developers to build on the green fields to the West of Wrotham Road / opposite Morrison’s. We appreciate it was a very difficult decision, they could have said NO, but they didn’t! If Labour wins this election, they will allow more building on green field sites. Not just a few houses but thousands of houses. Local roads are already very busy and more houses will mean more cars. We know that local services cannot cope with any more people. Only Conservative councillors will continue to fight against inappropriate development on our green open spaces.
Local Affordable Housing is Urgently Needed
Conservatives believe there is a need for more affordable housing on brownfield sites for our young people and retirement accommodation for the elderly. In the last twenty years, the Conservatives are the only party to have built council houses in Gravesham. In Conservation Areas we feel it’s important to protect the character of the area. You should ask your Labour councillors why they ‘sat on the fence’ during the recent old Gurdwara planning meeting. Local Labour councillors on the Planning Committee voted for the building to be demolished and replaced with flats (none affordable).
We Need ‘Cleaner and Safer Streets'
Rubbish is too often seen dumped on the streets. This is unacceptable! We will spend more of your council tax to ensure that additional Enforcement Officers clamp down on this anti social behaviour. We have also met with Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner. During the meeting he reported on some actions he is taking to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Gravesend. These include recruitment of 270 new Police Officers in Kent. He will protect all the 300 PCSO jobs and he will re-establish the Police Cadets with Police recruitment focused in areas like Gravesham.
Support for our Local Shops and Businesses
Over the years we have seen our local shops change in Gravesend, sometimes for the better and sometimes not. We must ensure that we support our local shops. We will ensure that we have the right mix of shops and listen to feedback from residents. We will work to make the refurbished Market a real success. Increasing parking charges in the town centre is really damaging. Conservative councillors opposed the recent increases in parking charges implemented by the ruling Gravesham Independent Party.
Inconsiderate and Illegal Car Parking
Another issue that local residents are concerned about is illegal or inconsiderate parking outside schools and parking near road junctions. We will continue to work with the Kent County Council to tackle this problem. We will ensure that Enforcement Officers spend more time to tackle the parking hotspots. We will also work with the local schools to encourage responsible parking at drop off and pick up times. We want to see more yellow lines in problem areas, a blanket 20 MPH speed limit and more ‘No HGV’ signs.
